I won an award in a contest with this display. I started with an album cover which was essentially what you see in the porthole. I conceived of and built the airlock door through which the astronaut could be seen floating above the Earth. Notice the Earth's differing orientation in each photo. To create this effect, I used a small motor to continuously rotate a disk on which I placed the planet's image. I was inspired by the scene in  2001: a space odyssey in which Heywood Floyd, in space, talks to his daughter on Earth.
